The Beatles in Bournemouth
Some Beatles history here for you: On Sunday 16 November 1963, some sixteen years before the Bootleg’s May 1980 show, the Beatles played a ten song set at the Winter Gardens as part of their fourth nationwide tour. The show goes into the history books as American TV networks NBC, CBS and ABC all sent cameras over from the US to find out what this British phenomenon called Beatlemania was all about. Two days later the Fab Four were seen on US TV for the very first time (playing From Me To You), pre-empting their Ed Sullivan appearances by some three months. The invasion had begun! The venue, which had also welcomed Morecambe & Wise, the Rolling Stones, Bowie and Queen eventually closed in 2002 and was demolished in 2006. The site is now a car park but the word is that plans to build a new entertainment centre on the site are in the pipeline.
