In 1976 a hopeful young fan called Stuart sent John Lennon a six-page, homemade questionnaire and to his surprise Lennon dutifully answered! The word association answers are certainly interesting – he comments openly on each Beatle, Bowie and Elton John.

He also gives his thoughts on Bootlegs – ‘good’ he says. Quite right too! (Yes, we know – he was referring to pirated, unofficial recordings and not a tribute band that was four years from forming. Oh well.) The document came up for auction at Bonhams in 2005 and was sold for over £10,000 – can you imagine would it be worth today?

Note: Howard Cossell had recently interviewed Lennon on radio in New York.
